Daily Commute

Alex Bruce lives in Cullman and commutes to Birmingham for work. He previously drove a hybrid vehicle but decided to go all-electric because of lower maintenance costs. He drives a Chevy Bolt EV, and it only costs him around $3 per day to get to and from work, which is around 110 miles per day. His vehicle has an average range of 240 miles, and has to drive to Montgomery and back regularly on one charge and has no problems.

Network of Fast Charging Stations

Kaylie Hill is from Cullman, and she drives a Tesla. She chose to opt for an all-electric vehicle to save on gas costs for her daily commute to work in Birmingham. She was spending over $350 per month on gas and is now spending less than $40 per month to charge her vehicle. She chose a Tesla because of the network of fast-charging stations and the increased range. Her Tesla can go around 310 miles per charge, and it only takes around 15 minutes to get 200 miles of charge using one of Tesla's fast-charging stations.

Is an EV right for you?

Purchasing a new vehicle is a big decision. For the past 10 years, we have heard more and more about electric vehicles and how they can help our pocketbooks and our environment. Recently, many major car manufactures made the commitment to move toward producing only electric vehicles in the next 10 to 15 years. Do you think an EV could be right for your needs?

4 Things You Should Consider

Types of EVs

There are three types of EVs. They are HEV (hybrid electric vehicle), PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle), BEV (battery electric vehicle). BEV's require less maintenance because they only have the electric components, but for those driving long distances daily, HEVs or PHEVs may be better since they are not solely dependant on the charge of the battery for travel.

Maintenance and Battery Life

BEVs require little maintenance beyond changing windshield wipers and tires. They have far fewer moving parts than gas-powered vehicles, so less can go wrong. Even brake pads last longer because of regenerative braking. Most EVs come with an 8 year/100K mile warranty. As the EV industry advances, the price of replacement batteries continues to decrease.

Local Charging Locations

We have 7 charging stations in Cullman County, including a two-vehicle charging station at our Eva Road office. To our knowledge, there are no charging stations in Winston County. There are many apps you can download to find charging stations near you. You can use the ChargePoint App to find our Cullman EC EV Charger as well as others on the same network. The ChargePoint App is free to download.

EV Ready Homes

Level 1 charging uses a standard outlet, and your car will get 3 to 5 miles per hour of charging. This is ideal for an individual that typically drives locally. Level 2 charging requires installing a 208-240V 1-phase AC outlet. This is ideal for an individual that commutes, and your vehicle will get 10-20 miles per hour of charging. We recommend a licensed electrician for level 2 charging and above to ensure service size is adequate and properly wired.
