Youth Education Programs

Youth Education Programs

Teaching electrical safety — especially to children — is one of Cullman Electric Cooperative’s top priorities. Powertown is a table-top safety demonstration suitable for any primary or elementary school class. Co-op employees talk with students about the danger of playing around power lines or substations and demonstrate using live electricity how electricity is present even though it can’t always be seen. Students can learn what to do if they are inside a vehicle that makes contact with a power line, and what to do if they ever find a power line on the ground. Presentations can last from 15 to 45 minutes depending upon a teacher’s needs.

Co-op employees can demonstrate for children how electricity works, the dangers it presents and how to stay safe around electricity. The portable, table-sized model is a wonderful teaching tool in the classroom.

Fieldtrips

Fieldtrips

Cullman EC can host students from elementary school up to high school age, offering a simple lesson in electrical safety or more complex lessons on electrical engineering and power generation. Students can also take a tour of our facility and speak with employees from different departments, and if the weather is nice, take a ride in a bucket truck.

Montgomery Youth Tour & Washington, D.C. Youth Tour
youth_tour2020.jpg

The Montgomery Youth Tour is an annual event sponsored by the Alabama Rural Electric Association (AREA). Counselors from our local high schools nominate deserving members of the junior class. In March, the group of students representing Cullman EC is joined by other high school students from across Alabama for several days to visit historic sites, meet state leaders, learn about state politics and have a whole lot of fun! In June, the Washington, D.C. Youth Tour is hosted by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA). Each year, three of Cullman EC’s youth tour participants travel with other students from Alabama for the week-long conference attended by more than 1,500 students from all over the country.

For Kids:

At Cullman Electric Cooperative, we understand that today’s children are the next generation of co-op members, and it’s important we teach them the value of the cooperative business model in addition to lessons on energy efficiency and electrical safety.
